Art of Mexico: Oaxacan carvings

Fourth graders enjoyed the story Dream Carver before modeling our own animals from clay. The family tradition in Oaxaca, according to the book, is for the men to do the woodcarving and the women do the colorful painting.

  1. Love this lesson--I also did this with my after school students (and used that same book--it truly is great!). We made snakes since they were super-easy to make, dried quickly, and easy to paint. Love your idea for the reliefs! We also worked on some tooled metal jewelry (treasure) boxes in conjunction with the snakes--both projects went home the same day.
